At the present state of humanity, I agree with you, expected improvements are easier said than done.

Elsewhere I have wrote, my proposals include increasing the overall average competence of humanity, in terms of intelligence, morality, ethics, wisdom, spiritual, specific skills and whatever is relevant.
For example, if the average morality quotient of humanity is 100 then we have to increase to say 150, otherwise it will be status quo. If the average IQ at present is 100, then we expect it to jump significantly to 130 in the near future.
I am optimistic these quantum leaps are possible based on the current trend of the exponential expansion of knowledge [especially neuroscience] within humanity.

My proposals also include control measures to ensure it is a trend [rising graph] of net-positive improvements.
Not-a-theist. Religion is a critical necessity for humanity now, but not the FUTURE.

I wish you (and all of us) well in this area. But alas there are forces that are driving things in the opposite direction. These forces are powerful and I would predict they will overwhelm the abilities of technology to overcome them.

The first is that intellectual capacity is currently genetically selected against, statistically. Female education is the most predictive indicator for delayed and therefore reduced childbirth.

The second factor is that in the Internet era, knowledge acquisition and expertise within intellectual pursuits have a historically low (and dropping) stature in society.
"As usual... it depends."

Looking at this in the way of chess game -

the KING (of mine) is the innocent -

and so as a player counting on long term success or to save my KING I can sacrifice with ease any of other my pieces which may be representation of the ethical norms
where each and every one has lower value in the hierarchy of truths than the innocent King (of mine)
