I have always thought that courtesy was invented to allow us to speak plainly to one another, while (hopefully) avoiding violence as a result. Your take on manners is complementary, and something I'd never properly appreciated, until now. Manners are about consideration for others. Thanks for that insight.
Isn't it odd though, considering that human 'success' is based on our being a social and co-operative species, that we have found the need to regulate our selfish and anti-social tendencies, in the form of manners and courtesy?
