Why we would or would not bother?
Having said that, whether one bothers or not is a matter of attitude, to put it in simplistic term which you may counter.
Some would say: Why bother, and why me to bother? Isn't life supposed to me enjoyed to the extreme, like squeezing to the last drop from the lemon? Little me has so little influence, that my concern is no more than a waste of effort. Tell you who should bother: the Government, the political leader, the academic, the big corporation, and the system. Go on, pass the blame to to them for what they have done. Capitalism has induced production, and supply by the producer has generated my demand, as a consumer who suffers (or profits) by consumption. I am merely the end of the chain. If nobody bothers, wouldn't your life be ruined? In that case, I can always leave the job to my neighbor, or the next generation.
Some would believe that there is meaning in life, and life is worthy because of its meaning. For Queen and country. Something to die for. Some contribution to make in this short life span. If not me, and if everybody copies me, then who? I hold the right to enjoy the wellbeing of life, but at the same time I must have the duty to safeguard and improve such wellbeing to be shared by all. Rather to die fighting for what I hold dear and sacrosanct.
It takes all sorts to make this world. In the final analysis, you answer to your own conscience. Only you can know what makes you happy.

Re: Why we would or would not bother?
Diversity in society is reflected in more than just function. The attributes that make a person useful for X tasks and unhelpful in Y tasks also shape their political and philosophical attitudes.
A common major logical error made in societies is the assumption that one's own approach is correct, rather than just one of various attitudes needed to make a society. Any legal attempts at homogeneity will struggle against the natural qualities of the diverse populations that are so necessary for successful civil societies.

I take your thread to be based on the whole nature of motivation and about possible indifference. It may be that an individual feels insignificant, in contrast to feeling a sense of empowerment. It is so easy to feel a mere number, with little influence. It may also be about does nothing matter, or everything matter. Personally, I prefer to argue that everything matters and, therefore, it is worth bothering, in making an effort to be of some influence in the world.
