Sadly I witness a lot of self harm. We see little guys provoking one or two bigger guys, until they get beaten up.

Afterwards they go down the road punching walls and windows.

Why, in your opinion do they do that?

Toughness is a bizarre concept before penis-reality.

The descriptions given remind me of personality disorders: borderline, narcissistic, etc. Many people are keyboard warriors, but if met on the street they tend to be nervous, insecure people. I was taught you must become a monster, then learn how to control it. That means, don't be a doormat but at the same time be empathetic to others emotions as well.

Wrong doing bases always on not knowing a better. So why not direct focus on the path to figure right ways out systemicaly? Maybe a very simple teaching on harming oneself, harming others, or both, help on the topic. Yet it requires a lot of toughness at first place: truthfulness on reflextion.

Self-preservation is programmed into the mind. I say this because when you are hungry, you look for food. My personal experience is a toughness is not part of anything most humans would subject themselves to.
For example: a woman is being hit by a man in front of a group of people. None of the people intervene. None of the people do anything with those handy cell phones beyond recording the poor woman being hit. Are they cowards? Or are they acting out of self-preservation because they don't want the violence projected at them?

Since you're asking, it sounds like you don't have any experience with nonintervention, ie you typically intervene. Is that true? If so, what do you do in your scenario?

I think this more of a moral issue. I would call 911 and attempt to provide the woman a way to escape the man. Since I possess a concealed carry permit, I would use the force necessary to stop the threat. In Oklahoma, we have castle doctrine and stand your ground laws that allow the use of deadly force to protect your home, yourself, and a third party against great bodily harm or a threat of death. I think that people forget that their phone be used for more than selfies or videotaping crimes.

Why does one never see threads about why toughness often enough works? I was the kid who got beat on till he learned to beat back. It works. And, no. I'm not a bully." I've picked up a few scars here and there. I've also garnered the right to go my way relatively unhindered. By the chronic poltroon, being proactive gets scorned as "toughness." So be it. The weak go on relentlessly chipping away at toughness till the dam breaks. Then they advance some "right" to be saved...saved by WHOM?
