No freedom, just rights and as those rights are contingent on the realities of the situation it turns out that in practical terms we have no rights at all.
Well we have the right to comply with those rights......or pay the consequences. Freedom is but a carrot on a stick.

"WE" all know? Which 'we" is that? the Royal WE?

"We" know nothing of the sort. What I am hearing from you is a person with a limited education and a chip on his shoulder.

If You want to address the issue I am willing to discuss it, until then I will just consider your childish ad hominem with the contempt it deserves.

If you actually want to think about what I said, maybe you could start and tell me how many rights were possessed by Homo Erectus, and what do you consider his freedoms?

I don't see that there is nothing but rights. I see plenty of scope for responsibilities all over the place, even here.

Well #197, whoever said "Professionalism at best, is but glorified ignorance in disguise" must have been one who had the REAL education - you know, the one that is gained from the university of life experience, that tells one that all mind constructs are ultimately meaningless. Time you stepped back and viewed the comedy.

I don't know who said that,Stormcloud, but I'd rather be an aeroplane being driven by someone who was trained by a professional. Likewise trust a medic who is not trained by some quack.

Well of course all drugs should be legal. Drugs are matter after all. Is it anybody's right to say what matter someone can and can't play with? No.

Whether or not drugs are good for society is a different question.

Parents.

Responsible adults who are in loco parentis.

Responsible adults who have to decide whether or not some other adult is a fit person to make life or death decisions for herself or others.

Yes you're right Belinda. What about fully functioning adults? People shouldn't have to tell them what they can and can't do.

Why is it some other adult's right to tell them that?

Belinda, the Sayer was an unconventional Psychiatrist who could see through all the endless mumbo-jumbo of the intellectual elite. I see no harm in philosophising but for all the supposed historical great thinkers over time that have written thousands of books and trillions of words for people to prate over as on here, there seems to be little to no improvement in humanity in a spiritual sense. Nor do I see what difference flying in a metal tube over the Pacific Ocean makes to the quality of human life, nor a medic injecting some chemical into the arm to prolong the life of a person for a few more token years. The species that seeks remedies are the same species that created the problems. Regards drugs I agree with you that there needs be mature people in place to protect the innocent but, I am afraid, these people have just about lost their grip. It's all a vicious circle that has spiralled out of control and humanity is reaping what it has sown. One wonders if it might not be wise to educate intelligently then let it 'do it's thing'? :)

I still believe people's freedom to choose needs be respected.

For historical reasons certain adult persons are deemed to be unfit to care for themselves or others. This is a sensitive area in these libertarian times and for instance social and medical services have to make difficult decisions regarding interventions. There is no reasonable doubt that professionals pay a lot of attention to the privacy and the rights of individuals.

There is increase in scientific knowledge about psychoactive drugs and it is relevant to note that barbiturates which were up to the nineteen seventies (need to verify decade) frequently used medicinally have since been all but abandoned due to their addictive potential. This has happened despite pharmaceuticals' profits on sales of barbiturates.

Stormcloud, I find it difficult to answer your last because there are so many non sequitur points that you make, most of which I mostly agree with as separate points.

What about fully functioning adults?
How do we distinguish one of those?

We look at what people do. If somebody's behaviour differs substantially from the norm, then we conclude they aren't 'fully functioning adults'.

So to say 'fully functioning adults' should be able to take drugs is just another way of saying we should accept drug taking as normal behaviour, which rather begs the question posed in this thread.

So you think you ought to have the right to sell concentrated Ricin?

Ricin is only matter after all!

Hey, Shadowfax, what were those policemen and the barrister out the back of the police station with a confiscated bag of hashish up to?

Incidentally, do you think you ought to have the right to sell concentrated alcohol, missiles, guns and tanks? .which are only matter after all.
