Nominate Books For April

Post by Eckhart Aurelius Hughes »

For the next 4 days, I'll be taking nominates for the April book of the month. Please only one nomination per person. On Sunday, I'll start the thread to vote on the nominations. Any member of the forums can vote. Whichever book gets the most votes will win. (If there is a tie, then one book will be this month's book and the other book will be next month's book.)

I'll post a thread to discuss the book of the month sometime in early April.

The book must be non-fiction and must be related to philosophy.

Try to think not to just think of a book you personally would like to read, but instead try to think of a book that would best to read and discuss as a group.

When nominating a book, please post both the title and the author.

Also, even if your nomination does not win, please try to read whatever book does win and participate in the discussion. The point is to be able to have a group discussion about a book that we all recently read.

Thanks,
Scott

"The Road to Serfdom" Frederik Hayek or
"Anarchy, State, and Utopia" Robert Nozick

With the upcoming election a little right-tilt or libertarianism wouldn't be out of place in the continual blare of left-wing media and some contrast to the two red diaper babies (or sympathizers of the same) running on the Democratic ticket.

Cheers,

I'm studying excepts from those two books in my political philosphy seminars anyway, so I'd probably benefit from the discussion. Still, I reckon something a bit more accessible might be good for starters. 'Practical Ethics' by Peter Singer might be a good first read.

Open Society and Its Enemies Vol. 1 by Karl Raimund Poppe

I've never personally read anything by Poppe but I've heard of his writing and just thought it would be something interesting to read for the political season. Just my input.

Hi Simian,

Both are very accessible, however I am not carrying a course load, I only need a little more motivation to actually re-read the two.

I have not read "Personal Ethics" so that would be fun too.
