Nominate Books for May

Post by Eckhart Aurelius Hughes »

The April philosophy book of the month is Reflections on Violence by Georges Sorel.

This thread is to nominate philosophy books for the May book of the month. To make a nomination, please post both the title and the author of the book. Only one nomination per person, and make sure the books are non-fiction and related to philosophy.

I'll leave this thread open for 1 week, and then I'll make a thread for us all to vote on the nominations. Whichever nomination gets the most votes will be the May book of the month.

When makings nominations, try to think of a book that would be good to read and discuss as a group.

Thanks,
Scott

My entire political philosophy summed up in one tweet.

"The mind is a wonderful servant but a terrible master."

I believe spiritual freedom (a.k.a. self-discipline) manifests as bravery, confidence, grace, honesty, love, and inner peace.

Kierkegaard's Fear and Trembling sounds great to me--if it's not too late for this month.

Hubert Dreyfus at UC Berkeley has several Webcasts on the book as part of his course in "Existentialism in Literature and Film."

Drawin's Dangerous Idea - Daniel C. Dennett. I've read it but i'd read it again.

Mark,

A good reply to Daniel Dennett's book that is worth checking out is "C.S. Lewis's Dangerous Idea."

I'd like to nominate C.S. Lewis's "Miracles," perhaps not as a stand alone book, but alongside Dennett's "Darwin's Dangerous Idea." They are definitely opposed, but that would make for good conversation, would it not?
