The "One True" religion
Every "church" claims to have the right beliefs
The Catholics, the Baptists, Islam, Budhists and so on
Each of them say that through prayer and/or meditation you can know if it is true.
I dont want to get into religous debate here - thats for another website lol - but as far as philosophy is concerened can there be any one individual "true" church/gospel/set of beliefs

They only appear to contradict each other, to some Perspectives. Those Perspectives that see such contradiction are, themselves, true features of Truth.

That is simply not the case. There is a spectrum of dogmatism ranging from the very authoritarian Islam and Roman Catholicism at the dogmatic extreme,to the liberal Quakers, Sea of Faith and Unitarians at the liberal end.Certainly the last named don't claim to have the right beliefs, or indeed all the answers.Every "church" claims to have the right beliefs

If a church claims there to be no one truth, isn't that them claiming to have the truth that there is no truth? Haha...any claim is either "we're right and they're wrong." If a religion claims that all religions are correct, isn't that them claiming to have the truth?Belinda wrote:That is simply not the case. reason comes to us not only from (a) book(s), but from what we have learned throughout our lives. the "god" like man practices reason.
I doubt strongly that any religion that has its standards concretely set in a book. a book is static it can not answer all questions, because the answer can change, case by case.
we must use reason to "translate" what the book says, and what our actions should be. therefore reason is the dominating force in religion, and everything else in a man who attempts to be god like.
a man of reason is a holy man.

Not necessarily. Perhaps they are presenting a Perspective. It is not necessarily a claim to 'truth', though it might be considered one, by some, until refuted.Musa wrote:...If a religion claims that all religions are correct, isn't that them claiming to have the truth?
Seems like a matter of Perspective.
How do you think the Sufis would answer?

Sufiism now exists in many different belief systems. I don't think Muslim Sufis would say other religions can be correct though. But honestly, I've never met a real 'Sufi'. Every Muslim does certain practices associated with Sufiism, but some take it to an extreme...nameless wrote:Musa wrote: How do you think the Sufis would answer?

I think the only thing that everyone in the world would agree to is pain. Because not even everybody agrees in death. One thing is for sure,
Pain is universal.
This leads me to the first Noble Truth, in hiphop layman's terms:
Every mofo suffers.
Damn, maybe Buddhism is the One True Religion!!!

None of this stops each of the schools advertising that they are the "best". But that is all it is: advertising. You don't believe all advertising, do you? Only a rube does that.
