Privatizing gains while socializing losses
What does the American public stand to gain from this war, if it goes right?
The same as what they gained from Iraq and Afghanistan wars: nothing.
Grabbing control over Russia's natural resources is certainly something that would benefit the ruling elite, but as usual, very little will trickle down to the ordinary Joe. Hence, the gains will be privatized pretty much completely.
What does the American public stand to lose from this war, if it goes wrong?
Unlike for the Iraq and Afghanistan wars: everything.
As Vladimir Putin has clarified umpteen times already, every serious attempt at effecting regime change in Russia -- that somehow fails or drags out -- will always lead to a massive Russian nuclear first strike on the United States. Hence, the losses will be socialized pretty much completely.
According to Murphy's law, it is always the worst option that will materialize into reality. When given the option, things will invariable seek to go wrong. So, don't be surprised.
