I believe the Americans who supported the war did it mostly under false pretenses: They were lead to believe that Iraq had a much stronger military capability than it did. They were lead to believe in the myth that Saddam was directly involved in 9/11. They were also told that the Iraqi people would greet the U.S. as liberators.
As a result, they let their government go to war in Iraq. I believe the war and occupation of Iraq has made the United States less safe by using its defense resources and by increasing anti-Americanism. The war in Iraq has also killed more Americans than 9/11.
Unfortunately, the people in power, who make the decisions in governments like the United States, will continue to make such devastating decisions. The war in Iraq will end up costing U.S. taxpayers trillions of dollars. That is trillions of dollars in revenue for politicians, bureaucrats and special interest groups, namely Big Oil and the military-industrial complex.
The few most powerful people do not care about what is good for the majority of people in their country; they care about what benefits them. Expensive devastations, like the war in Iraq, benefit the people in power even though they may hurt the rest of us. That is what I call the philosophy of government spending.
Thanks,
Scott
