To Find Peace, Just Stop Fighting

Post by Christal Merkey »

I do not understand how stopping fighting leads to finding inner peace. Isn’t that what meditation is supposed to be for?

Hi, Christal Merkey,

Thank you for your question. May I ask if that is the first sentence in the book with which you didn't understand?

In other words, did you understand every sentence that came before that one? If not, which is the very first sentence in the book that you believe you did not understand?

Did you agree with every sentence in the book? If not, which was the first sentence in the book with which you did not agree?

For those who want to see the sentence in question in context, I actually posted the page on which it appears on my Instagram.

Of course, the rest of that chapter also explains it in more detail as well.

In the strictest sense of the words, peace simply is the lack of fighting. That's what peace is.

In terms of inner peace, it's important to remember that it doesn't require outer peace, meanings your body can be fighting outer wars while still have inner peace, which is an idea I explore in my other topic, Invincible inner peace is possible.

Thank you,
Scott
My entire political philosophy summed up in one tweet.

"The mind is a wonderful servant but a terrible master."

I believe spiritual freedom (a.k.a. self-discipline) manifests as bravery, confidence, grace, honesty, love, and inner peace.

Peace is the absence of war. When you stop fighting (physically) there is peace. This is a different concept from 'inner peace' which is more for emotional calmness. The latter is the one linked to meditation.
Lately, people seem to forget that all they need to do is to stop fighting. It is not because we disagree on matters, that we should be fighting (physically nor verbally). It is okay not to win an argument, as long as nobody gets hurt in the process.

Peace is golden. When you're at peace, you tend to be more productive. In a bid to look fierce and fearful to others, some people indulge in senseless fights and disrupt their peace of mind. In this context, I feel more than physical fighting, emotional fighting is real too. Some fight the urge to be a better person just because they do not want to be taken advantage of. All in all, let us embrace peace.

Sometimes we have to fight to get peace. There is time for everything just as the Bible says. Fighting is inevitable. Sometimes, it is necessary for the greater good. And what is the greater good? Peace.

The fight is with ourselves and that little voice in our heads. We have the power to choose our path, and it is all a matter of deciding which person we want to be. Do you want to have inner peace? Do you want to keep fighting with others and yourselves? Do you want to be happy rather than angry? We must answer these questions for ourselves to find inner peace and not let the little voice win.

I agree with the original quote. With that, I had the concept of self-acceptance in mind. Then I read this comment and I understand that sometimes one needs to fight to get peace. It can be outside as well as inside oneself. I knew this, but your comment refreshed my understanding. Thank you for sharing this perspective!

A peaceful life isn't devoid of fights because peace can only be gotten through war. What makes people cease from troubling you is the danger they know you're capable of causing. I'd advise you pick your fights carefully though.

In my opinion you are truly peaceful when no matter what is going on around you, you can see the actual problem or situation, realize it and act accordingly.

By resisting internal and external struggles, we tap into a natural state of equanimity and serenity.

I have to ask, do you think that fighting is peaceful? Sure, protests and things like that have been peaceful, however, they are still fighting for something. This means that they are not happy with something that is happening to them or within them. If we are constantly fighting, with ourselves, with others, or with the world, we cannot have true peace and not inner peace. Meditation can help with inner peace because you can quiet your mind and not let the outside chatter get in the way. This can help with inner peace and understanding but if you are still fighting something, you will not have true inner peace.

I personally believe that sometimes if there are absolutely no fights, then getting a point across may be difficult and emotions and thoughts are repressed and the people involved are internally unhappy. I am NOT talking about wars and such but rather a fight between a parent and a child or a couple. Fights can be avoided if there is proper communication but as we are all humans, we often let our emotions take over and say the wrong things.

Finding peace often involves letting go of unnecessary conflicts and embracing acceptance. Sometimes, stopping the inner and outer battles can lead to a more serene state of mind.

Discovering tranquility often entails refraining from internal battles. Embrace acceptance, and you may find the path to peace.

I think I understand what the author is trying to say. When we stop fighting, we find peace. However, I do not agree with that notion. If you want Peace, they say, you must prepare for war. And that's on period.
