True love entails and requires freedom, in a deep and spiritual sense of the word.

Codependency is a form of slavery. Like all forms of addiction, it's a spiritual slavery. It's to become like a prisoner in your own body.

Abuse of the other, abuse of the self, and toxic enabling are all symptoms of codependency, and never representative of honest brave free-spirited true love.

All humans are on the addiction spectrum, and generally all addictions are just various different special forms of comfort addiction, the most common fundamental addiction uniting us all.

It's more comfortable to enable an addict or toxically codependent person rather than say no, so the enabler is as much an addict as the one they enable.

True love isn't so needy. It isn't so desperate.

The true happiness of free-spirited inner peace entails transcending the neediness. It's common sense: when you are truly happy and invincibly content, you don't feel needy or desperate. Inner peace is, in part, to transcend desire itself, let alone full-blown neediness. When you have this invincible spiritual peace and freedom, you don't have a spiritual hole in your heart that you're desperate to fill. You're okay. You need not. You simply don't need. It is, in part, to transcend addiction itself. It is to no longer have temptation as one's master. Then you are free. Then and only then can you fully love, truly love, as an independent, free person.

Then you are more parent than child, more angel than man, more spirit than flesh.

"I don't need you; I love you."

"I don't have to; I choose to."

Those are powerful words.

Only one who is free-spirited can speak them honestly.

Your definition of true happiness has changed my perspective. Yeah, it is totally true to say that when you're truly happy, you don't feel needy. True happiness brings satisfaction and content. People who find true happiness are free from worldly needs and their strings. Only a very few can reach that point, and then you can actually truly love some other person without an ulterior motive or needs.
