2017 Eclipse

Post by Steve3007 »

Who's planning to travel to or be in the USA in a position along the path of totality for the August 2017 total eclipse? Where are you thinking of viewing it from?

After a bit of research I'm thinking Caspar Mountain, near Caspar Wyoming. Trouble is, it doesn't seem to be possible to book hotels more than 1 year in advance! I was in Cherbourg, northern France, for the eclipse of 1999 but the clouds rolled in. I'm hoping Wyoming in August will be better.

Here's the philosophy part: Beauty and awe of natural phenomena like eclipses: evidence of divine design or a reflection of our empathy with the universe of which we are an inextricable part?

Hi Steve,

When you say "Here's the philosophy part", I'm wondering if you should have posted in the science section. Anyways I regard eclipses as part of nature. They are something to behold.

As far as you trying to rent a room in Wyoming, how about a house as opposed to a hotel? Would that work out better for you?

Yes, a house might be better. I suspect it's still too early for that too, though. But I don't want to leave it too late and find that everything is suddenly all booked up. I'll just have to keep a close eye on things.

Interesting: If the entire US population decides to go and see the eclipse and stand on the line of totality about 1 yard apart from each other, by my reckoning that would result in a continuous line of people from coast to coast 60 people wide.

Makes one wonder why Humans get so giddy about things of this sort.

I think the last para is a theological part. If it were a philosophical one, you'd be asking what do people use to justify that question, not actually ask it.

I'm still planning to travel from the UK to Wyoming, USA, in August this year mostly to watch the eclipse on the 21st. Perhaps to rope, throw and brand some dogies too. I hope that, one way or another, it will be a philosophically interesting experience. Is anybody else planning to watch the eclipse from Wyoming? Or from anywhere else?

Tell us more about the eclipse Steve. Where else can it be seen? Any chance for north Florida?

I've heard that Trump plans to launch a Twitter war against the eclipse, but it is as yet unknown whether the eclipse has a Twitter account.

Not only that, does the eclipse even exist? What is it's size, weight, mass? Do you really expect us to believe in something we can't even touch?

Piece of advice ... stay away from other people during the eclipse. I went to eclipse in 1999 Falmouth. People, for some bizarre reason, thought it would be great to cheer and scream and take pictures (lots of flash photography).

I managed to crawl around the cliffs and enjoy the experience beyond the reach of anyone else.

I've read that Wyoming has the lowest population of any state in the USA - about half a million - but has a slightly larger land area than the entire UK (population nearly 70 million) so hopefully that shouldn't be a problem.

A friend of mine apparently watched the 1999 eclipse from a mountain in Romania. Said it was fantastic.

Just so you know, Wyoming is also a very conservative place. Probably every one of those half million folks voted for The Dumpster, I mean Trumpster. Bring your cowboy hat and Bible.

By the time you get here, Steve, Wyoming may be the safest place to be, given how quickly our new President is polarizing the population. Anyway, I'll be settling for a partial eclipse from Southern California. If your travels afterward take you towards the L.A. area, I'll treat you to a drink somewhere.
