I don't enjoy metal music as a rule, but I will always have a soft spot for Black Sabbath. I love their first, eponymous, track. It strikes me as the musical equivalent of a B-grade horror movie:

My attitude towards B-grade horror movies is similar to Frank Zappa's ...

That just got me thinking of this cover. Super-calm tune ending an album that's otherwise a stormer from end-to-end.

Currently listening to Gipsy Kings - Bamboleo and packing bags for travelling on Monday, I am going to visit my friend at his new condo in Phuket, it's been 3 years since I last saw him, I am excited. It will be just for a week but still nice change

I like Sabbath's early days with Ozzy, but I do feel like they stepped up to a whole new level (not only vocally, but in sound and song structure) with Ronnie James Dio, perhaps one of the best front man in a metal band ever, along with Bruce Dickinson and Joe Lynn Turner. Dio and Turner happened to be lead singers in another one of my all time favorites: Rainbow. Turner also played lead singer for Yngwie.

Anthrax was fun, but never as much fun as some of its key members' crossover thrash band, S.O.D. (Stormtroopers of Death). It was sort of a joke and an experiment, but turned out to be a legendary album. B-movie stuff right at your face.

I saw Ronnie singing with Rainbow at Sydney's Hordern Pavilion in '76. a friend picked up front row tickets too.

We came prepared, with wax to protect our ears. Partway through the concert, sitting to the right of the stage, I thought I'd check the sound without ear protection. Being a rock musician, it didn't seem too bad, so I left my left ear uncovered for more of a raw experience. That night, in bed, my left ear was ringing like a siren!

The band put on a great show. Played for hours and it was the kind of wholehearted performance that is not seen in today's pop artists with their lip-syncing and shows can can finish in less than an hour. I was naturally drawn to watching Cozy Powell, who was sensational.

Ronnie was a much better singer, yes, but Ozzie had the vibe. Sabs became a bit classy with Ronnie, but I liked it better when they started out - raw, dirty and ludicrous, but all done with tongue firmly in cheek. This is probably post hoc rationalisation, I was a young teen when I heard their debut album, and you know how it is with music from your youth.

Seeing Ronnie and Rainbow, live!! Wouldn't have missed it if I ever had the chance. I did get to see Ozzy in 2011.

I was going to say - I see Scott Ian all over the place, almost as much as Dave Navarro. Not surprising Anthrax had interesting spinoffs.

Don't know if we were on this one already earlier? If so please forgive, I'm losing track after 62 pages.

And another big eclectic jam:

My main memories, aside from the bedtime tinnitus and the giant rainbow prop over the stage, were of Ritchie regularly shaking his hand to release tension after playing fast runs and of Cozy's 1812 Overture drum solo. The song I most remember was Mistreated which, from memory, was pretty monumental.
