Re: (Dis)Proving the Matrix
But, if we think about the idea of a computer simulation (or other version of this; it does not matter if we use a different idea, though the exact details will change), if the computer simulation were perfect, there would be absolutely no difference between it and a "real" world. There would only be a difference if the simulation were imperfect.
As for people believing we are in a matrix, there have always been people who are stupid and people who are mentally ill. And, of course, as stated above, it would be the same as what one observes in the "real" world, if the simulation (of whatever type) were perfect.
This is one of the things about metaphysics; once one attempts to be beyond perception, if the story does not result in any change in perception, then the underlying story is, pragmatically speaking, identical to any other underlying story that would result in the same perceptions. For example, in a computer simulation, you still do not want to stick your simulated hand into a simulated fire, because it hurts the same and the result of a simulated burned hand later is the same as if it were "real". So it makes no difference if you are in a computer simulation or you are "really real". So, practically speaking, the stories are the same, regardless of how different they may seem.
This makes me think of a quote:
Gwendolen in The Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde.Ah! that is clearly a metaphysical speculation, and like most metaphysical speculations has very little reference at all to the actual facts of real life, as we know them.
