One thing I noticed over the decades is that, if management finds out that you have some extra cool aspect happening in your job, they will immediately pass policy to remove it. It was a constant process of losing whatever I liked most about workplaces, and then lowering expectations to find new "favourite things" - to be later taken by management. In the end, my job was teaching people to construct an automated system to replace me.
