Having read a few of Carlin's books in the last couple of years, I can say that while he called out what he (correctly in my opinion) felt were ridiculous ideas on the right, he also (less famously) derided policy he disagreed with on the left for he did not suffer fools well. Thus some would say he was closer to a Libertatian than a Lefty.

Nope. He hated censorship and was hated by many feminists. He considered the US government utterly corrupt, both sides (for some reason there are only two in the US) and to such a degree that many conspiracy theorists on the right would happily chime in. A very large part of wokeness entails thinking that people should not be exposed to certain ideas. That this itself can be oppressive. That certain speakers should not be allowed at colleges. That people should be banned from Twitter, Youtube, ever acting again...because of what they have said. He would be fighting wokeness on this all the time; it goes against one of his long term central political rages.

The right cannot claim him. But the left cannot claim him either.

He was cynical about governments and corporations to a degree found on the fringe of both sides.

The idiot maga moron rightwards are correct. He would have been cancelled, or they would try to cancel him.

Generally speaking he was more left than right. But wokeness is not exactly a traditional left position. It has some very specific ideas about freedom of speech that he would have hated. And a lot of wokies are really quite neutral about economic issues. They are group category addicts and vastly less interested in class than in race and sexuality/gender. They are often quite happy to have a very powerful government which they want ot use to stop people from saying and doing certain things.

And Carlin would be down with a lot of the right's skepticism and criticism of the pharmaceutical industry and medicine in general. And I don't mean the Republican views of these things. I mean the fringe right.

Neither side gets to claim him.

Once people could be complicated.
Now you have to pick your team - and it's one of two - or be damned.
GC was a person who thought for himself and did not adhere to a party line.
So, he'd probably be pissing off a lot of people right now,
as any good comedian should.
Oddly, nowadays, people use a very strange excluded middle fallacy. If X has characteristics that are not A, then he or she is on Team B. That's it.
Not only is there an excluded middle, but there are many more possible teams. There's an excluded outside fallacy here also. That nothing can be outside the two current Teams.
Pepsi and Coke are quite happy to have everyone think they should choose between those two drinks.
GC dranks something else whenever the **** he wanted.

He talks about "they do not want people capable of thinking for themselves". That is a left complain, since it is the left that push for education. LIbertarians are against the provision of education more even than the right.

You're right that he didn't follow textbook Libertatian policy slavishly, but I'm also correct that he disagreed with numerous traditional left wing policies.

He had zero solutions. He is where the left starts; by unpacking the assumptions and failings of the establishment. He punched upwards and if he criticised the fat poor and stupid he always directed attention to those in control.

I recently saw a vox pop asking MAGA people what needs to be done to change. The working people need to get together against the bosses and fight for their rights. What about socialism? Yeah we should fight that. Ordinary people might be ignorant, but belonging to unions is on the increase in the US. They are working for socialism, believing they are fighting for it.
People love Carlin. THis is what woke was always meant to be.
Things get twisted.
