When responding to a topic- is it okay to use an analogy to explain what you are trying to express?

I think it is fine. Some don't care for analogies and will point out the dull fact that analogies are not exact representations.

It's "by the rules", but some ignore the similarity you're trying to highlight and fixate on random differences. That's their problem but it does open the way for (sometimes intentional) miscommunication.

I think analogies are very helpful.

However, it's important to remember that they are tools to explain what one means, not to argue/defend/support one's point.

There is great value in explaining one's position or through in detail and clearly, and sometimes repetitively, because many seeming disagreements are really merely mutual misunderstandings.

Of course, while both are needed, a more crucial aspect of avoiding misunderstanding and the false appearance of disagreement where there isn't actually any is in carefully listening and working hard to understand what the other person is saying (especially before expressing even the slightest disagreement), which is something we can all always do better at, myself included.

I've come accross quite a few of these instances but have only been here a day so far. If that is the case, then it would be great to be able to know which topics new members can engage in.

I note that, in the recent past, some contributors have accumulated 'warnings'. I would like to know under what circumstances I might be given a warning ... so that I can avoid getting one, of course.
