New Mention System!

Post by Eckhart Aurelius Hughes »

Exciting Announcement, I just installed a new mention system for the Philosophy Forums.

The mention system uses the following BBCode in which you replace USERNAME with the username of the member you want to tag:

Code: Select all

[mention]USERNAME[/mention]
However, as an easy shortcut you can type the @ symbol and then begin typing the first few letters of members name, and a popup box should appear. You can then click the name of the member you want to tag, which will quickly generate the BBCode for you.

As an example, I will tag Greta now. :)

Tagging a member not only highlights their name, but it should send a notification to the member according to their settings on the Notification Options section of the Board Preferences Tab of the User Control Panel (UCP).
My entire political philosophy summed up in one tweet.

"The mind is a wonderful servant but a terrible master."

I believe spiritual freedom (a.k.a. self-discipline) manifests as bravery, confidence, grace, honesty, love, and inner peace.

Scott - it's a quicker and easier alternative to quoting where context isn't important.

Very cool. Out of curiosity, is this something you achieved with a phpBB plugin of some kind, or did you write the PHP for the feature yourself? Is there a discussion of the site's technical stuff anywhere?

The mention system is a phpBB extension written by someone else, available publicly. If you have a phpBB forum and need the public link to the extension, let me know.

Thanks for the info, no I was just asking because I have messed around a bit with PHP and was curious about the technical side of phpBB.

I'm thinking of building a community forum as a hobby project in node.js, so I've been poking around a bit on sites like this one, arguman, hacker news etc. for some perspective on what kind of design challenges I could expect to face.

Ah, OK, thanks. It worked this time. I did follow the instructions as provided by Scott but perhaps I didn't wait long enough for the Dropbox to...er...drop.
