Badly Designed Website
There are two situations that seem to precipitate this problem,
1) After typing a reply, and hitting the "Submit" button the web site sometimes returns me to the login page, (presumably having timed me out). After logging and returning to the previous page, my words have disappeared forever. Whilst a logging request can happen in other websites such as Philosophy Now, it has always retained my words so nothing is lost.
2) At other times, and in circumstances I do not completely understand hitting the RETRUN key can also have the same effect of booting me off the reply page and trashing my text.
Has this happened to anyone else?

I'm so glad you said that. That's what I thought at first too.Misty wrote:Yes - I thought it was just me and I was doing something wrong!
Is it likely that a moderator will read this? Or someone 'in control"?

Firefox -- and I think any browser besides IE -- is a lot better about saving entered text on any website whether resulting from an error or personal computer crash. Even if I accidentally hit the red X button to close Firefox, I can restore my previous session with all the text entered just as I left it.
One workaround that may work would be to hit your back button after logging in and either reloading the page or copying the text and then pasting it after reloading the page, both of which would work in Firefox but I'm not sure about Internet Explorer because again I don't know if Internet Explorer preserves the text you had written when you leave a page and then go back to it or when you reload it like Firefox does.
How long passes between when you open the posting screen and when you hit submit? If it was more than an hour and a half, the session would have expired. I will increase this to 2 hours and see if that helps.
In any case, I think I will have to do some testing in other browsers to see if I can recreate the problem.

I am only on posting sites for not more than 10 minutes or so at a time.

I notice you both have a lot of variance in the IP addresses that you use to access the site. If the IP address is changing while you are in the middle of using the site, there is a security check that will cause the session to be rejected and require you to log in. Are you accessing the website from a moving mobile device such as a smart phone while driving in a car or multiple WiFi connections? I can lower the strictness of the check, but this won't help if most of your IP address is changing as a result of connecting to a different ISP using a different WiFi connection, but may help if the variance in IP is caused by your ISP providing dynamic or multiple IP addresses.

I am not computer savvy so I don't know what your questions mean - but we travel every 3 to 4 weeks and are in different hotels - is that what you mean? I never post from a phone.

Re: Badly Designed Website
If I type something in a form in Google Chrome and then hit submit and then hit the browser's back, what was written in the form is still there, not deleted, even if I was logged out in between and the post was not actually submitted to the website. If you test it out, I think you will find this works. This method is also helpful for when you have written half a post or on a different website have half filled out a form and then accidentally navigate away from the page such as by accidentally clicking a link or a bookmark button on your screen.Misty wrote:No, the post deletes.

Anyway, my best guess is that this issue of being logged out while writing a post is being caused by a dynamic IP. I have reduced the strictness of the security check for IP address so that these changes in dynamic IPs on the same device through the same ISP shouldn't lead to one being logged out. Assuming my guess is right that that was the cause, this will make it so neither of you two are not logged out while writing your posts. If you notice the problem has not gone away or after some time has passed and it seems to have been resolved, then please let me know.
In either case, my apologizes for the inconvenience and my thanks for bringing the issue to my attention.

I'm using Safari on MAC.Scott wrote:I have never experienced this problem, but I use Firefox. What browser are you all using? Are you using Internet Explorer? If your timeout is ninety minutes then this is not the problem. Whenthe problems have occrred it has always been within a few minutes.

Has the problem been resolved since I altered the security settings regarding IP addresses about 6 hours ago?

The problem happened again. I was answering a long posting in which another had already interjected my text with his own. For clarity I decide to leave the nesting alone, and make my words a different colour so that I could add answers piecemeal. So I wrote a piece of text and changed it with "Font colour". I then looked further down the text and used RETURN to make a line for my next response. Immediately the address bar on the browser went blue as if searching for a new page and it returned me to the page continuing the original text with all my additions removed.
It seems that I can use Return usually unless I have at some point moved out of the text box (such as choosing another colour) and back into it. Hitting return seem to be the trigger to loose all my efforts. Bloody annoying especially when you have been working for several minutes.
In the end I copied the entire text and added my comments in "TextEdit" then pasted in back to your website. A bit clumsy but less frustrating.
PS I have just reproduced the same effect by selecting a different colour then hitting return - got your post back by my additions were gone. This time I did cntrl C to keep my text.
I hope this is useful.

STOP PRESS!!!
It happened again, and I was not even relying to anyone. I wrote a beautifully worded post and hit return twice for the final statement, and the web address line when to search and pushed me back to a blank "POST A REPLY" page.
THis is driving me NUTS!
