Hey Everyone!

Please post all introductions in this forum. Tell us how you found the philosophy forums, what interests you about philosophy, and a little about you, such as your age, where you live, what you do for a living, etc.

Hey Everyone!

Post by TasteTheInsanity-18 »

Hello everyone! I joined about a couple of weeks ago, but I haven't had the time to post anything yet; and, obviously, the "Introduction" section had to come first.

My name is Lindsay, I've been reading "Blackwell's philosophy and pop culture series" of books for about 6 years now. And for every book, and after every chapter I read, I write a philosophical reflection based off what I just read. I'm an autodidact, which means I learn by teaching myself through reading; in conjunction, I learn even faster by combining it with writing. Another example of this would be: I'm also learning new vocabulary words. I start from the beginning of the dictionary (A) Write down the word and definition (I have 60 written down for now to memorize), and then I memorize those new words by including them in my writing, whether that's a philosophical reflection, article, short story, etc. I guess you could say I'm an autodidact plus (lol).

Anyway, along with this online forum and a couple of others, I joined because no one I know or talk to in my life is even interested in philosophy, most think it's boring or they just plain don't understand any of it. So I'm hoping that by being on this site I can get some intellectual stimulation via philosophy theories and comparisons and such; and, hopefully, make some new friends to boot. :)

@Taste Theinsanity
I just read your introduction and I look forward to interacting with you on the forum. I empathise about not having anyone to talk about philosophy in life, which is why I joined. I find that when I try to start talking about philosophy with friends they act as if it is a bit peculiar. When I was moving a year ago one of my friends suggested that it might be a good idea to throw my philosophy books in the bin.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who has "friends" who thinks it's odd/weird/boring that we're so passionate about this subject. On the last sentence you wrote, no offense intended, I'm just a brutally honest type of person; but that friend sounds like a **** friend indeed. If it was my friend who said that I would have given him/her a BIG "**** you", and immediately end the friendship. Because I can understand if you don't like philosophy, it's not for everyone, but acting and talking like an asshole about it is going too far. I hope you cut that person out of your life or that they apologized profusely. Hope to see you out on the forums as well. Can't wait to have intellectual stimulation and hopefully make some new friends. Did I say that last part before? I don't remember. ADHD here :lol: :)

I think quite a lot of people come here because so few people in their "real lives", so to speak, are interested in these kinds of discussions. I sometimes have philosophically oriented discussions with my current work colleagues, but not often, and most past work colleagues would have been entirely uninterested. I did setup and run a philosophy discussion group in a local pub a few years ago. That attracted a dozen or so people from my local area, including at least two who had formally studied the subject to degree level. But it fizzled out a bit and died altogether when covid started.

Very few people here are what you might call experts/specialists in philosophy. (I'm certainly not). But there have been some over the years. To my knowledge, there is currently just one who has studied and taught philosophy to degree level who currently posts here regularly.

I have noticed that so far with the few people I HAVE interacted with thus far. I didn't realize how common it was that so many people don't have people in their life (whether they live nearby or not existing in their lives whatsoever) to intellectually stimulate each other with ideas pertaining to the umbrella term of "philosophy".

I live in the U.S.A. so I understand about the covid-19 troubles, you could always try it up again when the world calms down more. Maybe give it another year or two??

I don't mind about the limitations on "experts", because I, myself, am far from one :lol: But I have been learning for years, so, at least I know what I know and I'm humble about it. And I definitely DO NOT pretend to know about things I know no clue about (people like that are just very annoying to be, and pompous if you want my personal opinion). :)

I guess it's not wholly surprising. When you consider all of the many issues that most people deal with in their lives, it's understandable that arguments about whether the universe is infinite, whether there's a god or abstract musings on the foundations of ethics aren't a priority.

That's understandable if you're not passionate about the subject. I'm sure there are website forums for people who love anime. I am indifferent to anime, therefore, as you said, it's not a "priority" to me. But I AM passionate about philosophy, that's why I'm here, and you as well I suspect lol

So what is a 'New Trial Member' to do? Limited to replies only on the Newly registered users Introductions thread, or are there other places? Maybe I need to investigate and find where all the new user rules are written (no I don't have time to spend reading through 'the rules') I've been spending my time reading interesting posts on interesting threads. Maybe I should just ask, post the question? Am I limited to a number of posts/replies or do I need to start a new thread? Anyway I'm not too concerned, there's sufficient stuff here to keep me entertained.. for the time being! ;)

Steve3007, I find most people don't ever have an interest in considering even for a moment let alone wanting to actually 'know' anything about whether the universe is infinite, whether there's a god or abstract musings on the foundations of ethics. Especially women I find, my experience although not extensive suggests that very few, maybe one in ten of the very few men that ever take the slightest interest in 'philosophical thoughts' are female and able to put forward genuinely 'considered theories' to further specific ideas of abstract thought. In short, what are the chances of finding anyone to exhange all these 'fascinating wonders' as a friend or indeed even as a close friend. I fear we are destined to be forever lonely when it comes to 'deep thoughts shared'.

Steve3007, so would you consider someone who has studied and taught philosophy to degree level to be in some way a more 'philosophical' person to you, likely to 'spark your interest' to be a worthy and 'qualified' forum member here to provide you with 'good counterarguments', 'good 'counterstatements' and good 'counterreasoning'? Could someone 'less worthy' such as myself a 'staunch autodidact' satisfy your serious and not so serious 'philosophical musings'.. based on your experience people like us here are few and far between, setting up and running a philosophy discussion group 'in a pub', what are the chances of finding a group of 'suitable people' from your local area? Very low I would imagine, unless maybe you were in London or a major city. Internet forums appear to be the answer, although it would be nice to sit face to face and discuss what gets written here on the forum. I have looked at setting up a local group myself but from what I could see something like the 'meetup' groups website is expensive, unless there's a cheaper alternative out there somewhere?
