I saw that about the high status of St Andrew's. Good news for Prince William and his wife the Duchess too.

If I remember correclty, William studied at St. Andrews because he couldn't get accepted at Cambridge or Oxford. When I tried to look for the site that listed St. Andrews #1, I found several on which Cambridge and Oxford are still far ahead.

A personal story: When my nephew had just finsished his last year of school, and had not yet heard whether he was accepted at Cambridge (one can apply to Cambridge or Oxford, not both, and the admission standards are identical, or were 15 years ago when my nephew applied), my son, my nephew (who lived in greater London) and I went on a two week tour of Ireland. My nephew enjoyed telling his parents, "I don't even know if I want to go to Cambridge. I might not go even if I get in."

Of course this horrified his mother (my brother, who worked in London much of his adult life, was less concerned). It became a standing joke with us. Of course, Jack ended up getting accepted, and attending. As everyone knew he would.

A one minute google search failed to confirm my memory, but I remember Oxbridge attempting egalitarian admission standards which Will didn't meet.

That reminds me of all my liberal friends wondering, "How did a moron like G.W. Bush get into Yale?"

I'd always respond, "I know Yale alumni are often successful, but I doubt Yale regrets its decision to admit a future President. Whatever the reasons for admission, he hasn't done TOO badly for himself, even for an Eli."

How? Uummm... maybe being a grandson of a US senator, the son of an oil company president who was a US senate candidate as well as a legacy might have something to do with it? Possibly?
