Void Introduction

Post by calm-realm »

Hello people,

I am posting this because I think is the best practice after creating an account, but I am not very familiar with the forum structure (I mean in general, not this forum). If there is any how-to start page or topic, I would appreciate some orientation. I checked the FAQ but that is more for techical issues apparently.

What brings me here is the search for a place where people discuss important/hard questions. On my daily life, this do not happen as people seem to get annoyed when discussions end up having many different possible answers.

I would prefer not to give details about my person, but I will at least explain why. In "real life" (not internet), I find it always hard to listen to new Ideas without any bias caused by where it is coming from. For instance, if the discussion is about technology, the engineer gets more credibility than the artist. If it is about buddhism, people might assume that the asian knows more than the european. If it is about spices, we assume the old lady knows what is best and ignore the young student. I do not like this discrimination/prejudice, and it IS hard to avoid.

The way I see, we should avoid it and stick to the facts, scientific method, etc. If someone is a specialist or experienced in a subject, that should not give the person credibility by itself. The ability to justify or explain the thoughts with ease and simplicity, for example, is much better evidence.

On the internet, with have the wonderful opportunity to isolate (most part of) the person behind the comments, making it easier to stay just with the facts and ideas. I think this is good. The age/profession/culture aspects are very important for the individuum, but not relevant in a philosophical discussion. That is "just" relevant in the personal life (maybe a bit in the professional life)

Well, thank you for reading. I am looking forward learning and contributing to the discussions.

I also keep my identity private. It is often amusing to see the assumptions other members make. My first assumption about you is that you do not need to be advised to keep calm. Some members are more than a bit overwrought and tend to lash out, but stay in the calm-realm. Those who have been around for a while consider the source of what is said.

Best advice is just jump in there and contribute to topics and posts that interest you. Your posts will have to be approved at first, which can be frustrating, but we do our best to approve them quickly, and after the trial period you can post without approval.

The quote function is helpful. For example:

calm-realm (or calm-realm said or such):
The way I see, we should avoid it and stick to the facts …
Highlight the material you want to quote and use the quote button. Since there may be more than one conversation going on it is important to identify who and what you are responding to.

Hello calm-realm,

"If it is about buddhism, people might assume that the asian knows more than the european." (I don't know how to 'quote button' yet.)

Good point about the possible influence of the speaker's physical presence, and online discourse allowing clearer objective thought on the topic.
A considerate and responsible speaker will adjust their persona to minimize their "distraction level" because they value their words on the topic and cannot allow their "sensational level" to distract their hearer(s) overmuch. Therefore the good philosophy teacher who also happens to be a beautiful woman will dress modestly etc. Not trying to teach here, just enjoyed wording this rule.

Yours, Luxin
