Family, Friends, Philosophy. In that order.
I am an undergraduate student of philosophy and psychology in the USA. I didn't know I wanted to major in philosophy until I realized how philosophy fuses the ancient methods of inquiry with the cutting edge of human thought. I spent a lot of time looking around and trying different majors, looking for something that was intellectually demanding, meaningful to me, and that I was intrinsically motivated to study. I went through biology, chemistry, and psychology before finally figuring out philosophy was the thing I was looking for. Still, I am keeping that psychology major so I can graduate with a bachelor of science, in addition to the B.A.
The first book that pointed me towards philosophy was Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, which remains one of my favorites. The reading I have done since then has led me to my main philosophical interests in epistemology, philosophy of science, philosophy of mathematics, and philosophy of mind. My interest in the human mind as well as philosophy and teleological interpretations of our past and future led me to artificial intelligence, which is the field I hope to work in. Still, long sessions of coding and math don't compare to the exhilarating journeys through the high country of the mind that philosophy offers!
I look forward to reading and discussion on this forum and hope to meet you around here.
