hi
The philosophers I've read the most of are probably Nietzsche and Leo Strauss. I suppose the bedrock of my thinking is a form of existentialism, but I've built some rather unorthodox (and perhaps objectionable) positions on top of it. I'm mostly interested in politics, ethics, and aesthetics. I think just about all the rest can be left to science. I don't think philosophy is the pursuit of truths but rather the construction of systems that one can become committed to. I mean, as far as there's truth: the universe is meaningless, we all die and don't experience anything after death, there are no grounds for our positions other than our allegiance, humans are merely animals(but our animality is worth cultivating against more altruistic conceptions), etc. Despite all this, I actually believe in living and bearing children. I mean, what else is there to do? You're an animal, don't you want to be biologically successful?
I'm joining because I kind of want to run some ideas by people. I have a vague goal of one day publishing articles and maybe books on philosophy, not as a professional but as a competent amateur. I've taken some introductory philosophy classes at college but I don't have a degree in it. If I end up going back to school, I might get a philosophy degree (double majoring in something useful--comp sci).
