New Member Introduction: Student of Nietsche

Post by John196920022001 »

Hello everyone,

My name is John. I am a student of the writings of Friedrich Nietzsche. I am currently working on a translations of the works of an obscure philosopher named African Spir that seems to have had a large impact on Nietzsche. To my knowledge nothing of Spir's is in English. Right now I am working on Spir's book Thought and Reality (German, Denken und Wirklichkeit). I look forward to joining in group discussions with you all

The correct translation from the German is overman, which he never claimed to be, but reserved it for the future when people surpass what they were back then.

Dear John196920022001 -- I have tried reading Nietzsche, and tend to bog down. Never heard of your African Spir but just looked at a Wiki page on him. If you were to write something about either of them, and maybe anything else, I would try to read it! In the meantime, good luck! Ross Melton, Jr.

What social utility does Nietzschean thinking have? I mean, if everyone in the entire world thought of nothing but how to ruthlessly dominate his neighbour, what kind of world would it be? It's the philosophy of the comic book villain, a character never intended to resemble a real human being.

Dear RossMeltonJr, I do read Nietzsche, and I am trying to read Spir. The problem with none of his works are in English. So I am having to use translation software

Dear Theophane, The Nietzschean thinker does not think in terms of social utility. Nietzsche believed moral judgement were based on things that did not exist. Nietzsche said that decision should be based on what the consequences might be rather than some intent, i.e. moral vs. immoral

Dear The_Thinker, Thanks

Can you clarify if you are referring specifically to Zarathustra?

If truth be a woman what then are these not grounds to suppose that all of us on this forum are Dogmatists?

The Will to Power doesn't exclusively mean ruthless domination, it also represents the basic psychological principle of success in all things, and no toleration for limitation and weakness. Sure, domination can be a means to that end but it is not the end itself, such a false concept comes from the National Socialist misunderstanding of Nietzsche.

John196920022001, could you tell us a bit more about Spir’s influence on Nietzsche? An internet search yielded several restatements of the claim that he was an influence but no textual analysis to show that influence.
