Good lord, I don't want to have poor RESS banned, just don't want to ... ah well, I can handle it. No problem.
Bye the bye, why no ignore function? It is quite common and handy on philo sites. It makes the visit much more pleasant if one doesn't have to keep avoiding the same annoying or rude of whatever 'meadow muffins' again and again!

I added an ignore feature. To ignore a member, just click the button on the upper-right part of any of their posts. If you notice any problems with the feature, please tell me.

But please, I ask you all to avoid ignoring other posters as much as possible. Instead, send me a PM if you notice any other user making unacceptable posts so I can warn or ban them accordingly.

I want this to be a place for civil, open-minded discussion, in which playing devil's advocate is helpful. And if someone's posting isn't up to par, I want to be informed about it.

By the way, you will not be able to ignore mods and admins.

That might be problematic, as much as some people might be annoying or even hated, conversations may start to get confusing with all manner of missing information...

Exactly. That's why I would greatly prefer if users just report inappropriate or substandard posts to me rather than ignore the poster.

But I'm willing to try this ignore feature out.

OK, Big, HUGE flaw in the 'Ignore' feature...

It takes only one click to ignore everything by that person on every thread in every forum, but you have to click on everysingle post by that person to undo it temporarily & I can't find the "Ignore List" to undo it !!!

You can click on a post by a user that you ignoring to temporarily unhide that post.

You can stop ignoring that person, and thus show all their posts by going to the ignore page which you are given an option to see after every time you select to ignore someone.

I am strongly opposed to tattling. Does anyone remember, "Tattle tale, tattle tale, hanging from a bulls tale"? I am horrified by what is happening in our schools today; training our children to rely on authority, instead of expecting them to handle their own problems. Carrying this grade school training over to adults, is my idea of a serious threat to our country. It was the evil Germans who reported their family and neighbors to the "authorities" and this is what we defended our democracy against. Many died to defend our democracy and liberty. Was it all in vain?

I want to assure everyone, as long as I am treated respectfully, I will not use the ignore button, but if someone repeatedly and deliberately insults me, I have the right to protect myself. No one should be forced to read personal attacks, and it is foolish to engage with someone who repeatedly makes personal attacks. If someone continues this bad behavior I will choose to not know about it, by using the ignore button. It is my hope, just knowing this can be done, will put an end to the bad behavior.

Actually how different is that from what is already happening? These forums are not as bad as some I have seen. In other forum experiences the private attacks and counterattacks really messed up a thread, but mostly these are avoided here. However, I have on occasion noticed the topic does seem to drift.

In another forum experience, I put a very intelligent but also very insulting person on ignore, and only if this person was quoted would I know what this person said. Usually the quote was not a reply to what I wrote, so it would not contain the insults I wanted to avoid. I was able to get good information and enjoy good arguments without the insults. So for continuity in a discussion, we might use the quote function, and if the quote does contain an insult, edit it out. A good editor can seriously improve our writing.

Athena is right. However there remains the difficulty of separating personal attacks from attacks on a person's dearly held ideas.The whole perception of one's identity can be bound up in some orthodoxy. The recent incidents when Muslims took offence when Muhammad was ridiculed illustrate this. Christians are much more tolerant to ridicule than Muslims, poor old tolerant Christians!

The only way out of the dilemma seems to me to be a sort of elevated paternalism towards the fixedly orthodox, as if they are not entirely responsible for their own ideas, like mentally ill people.I don't enjoy this as I am liberal by nature.

This is one reason I feel at ease in a forum like this where philosophy rules okay either in its orthodox form or in its organic form.
