Philosophy Discussion Forums | A Humans-Only Club for Open-Minded Discussion & Debate

Humans-Only Club for Discussion & Debate

A one-of-a-kind oasis of intelligent, in-depth, productive, civil debate.

Topics are uncensored, meaning even extremely controversial viewpoints can be presented and argued for, but our Forum Rules strictly require all posters to stay on-topic and never engage in ad hominems or personal attacks.

Chat about anything your heart desires here, just be civil. Factual or scientific questions about philosophy go here (e.g. "When was Socrates born?"), and so most homework help questions belong here. Note, posts in the off-topic section will not increase new members post counts. This includes the introductions and feedback sections.

One of the teachings by Oren Lyons { Native American Faithkeeper of the Turtle Clan of the Onondaga Nation/Seneca Nations{?} of the Iroquois Confederacy }, as an after thought, to be a good chief, he states, approximately,...'oh yeah, it is important that a chief not takes things, or ones self, to seriously'.......

...Oren Lyons--- "Native-American Faithkeeper, Human Rights Advocate, Environmental Activist: b. 1930
"The law says if you poison the water, you’ll die. The law says that if you poison the air, you’ll suffer. The law says if you degrade where you live, you’ll suffer… If you don’t learn that, you can only suffer. There’s no discussion with this law."......

..."Oren Lyons in interview---There are, I think, many things that we have in common with you. One is common sense. Common sense is really what you're going to have to rely on.

..... It certainly isn't coming from leadership in contemporary times. I don't care in what part of the world you are, there is a real crisis in leadership, more specifically in ethical leadership and responsible leadership. In this country there is probably the most devastating leadership—directed against almost all common principles of survival, common sense, and decency—that we have ever had.

.....It's essential to raise new and better leaders with sound judgment, with good will, and with the interests of the future at heart."....

Finding those pearls is a matter of perception and what you're willing to accept as such which includes those who actually think they produce them. Based on how fast posts are read and taken out of context by merely quoting the fraction one wishes to argue against as an easy target, the vast majority of responses are bunk to begin with. The only reason I occasionally post is to deliver my two cents worth without expecting change by way of responses; received or not is fine with me.

The truth of the matter is that Philosophy Forums are rapidly becoming massively boring with the same subjects and responses regurgitated to the point of nausea...a debased example of eternal recurrence. The most interesting and active forums are the more specialized ones: history, science, art, music, etc., in which knowledge is required to participate. Philosophy by comparison is a free for all.

They Call Me Gem
...r6....

perhaps a diamond in the dip
casting rubies onto the road
pearls from the sea
silica out of quartz
cyrstaline tears
protein bells
photo-pops
pie in the sky?

or,

a sandstone humus
combing my terra-cognitive
loosening the pebbles in my brain
absorbing the fungus among-us
feasting on moonlit vegetation
bathing in the algae and bacteria
I liquify and evaporate,
towards cosmic heaven.

There is a solution to the problem stated in this thread. Create the kind of forum you'd like to be part of.

You could for instance create an invitation only forum, and not publish any post until a mod has evaluated it. If you published only high quality content over time you would attract high quality posters.

Creating the forum would likely not be enough. You'd most likely have to have an ongoing outreach program where you searched the Net for interesting writers and invited them in. This would go really slow at first, because no one wants to be the first to arrive at a party, and people want you to do all the work of building the forum before they join to harvest the benefits.

But, if you are truly serious, and truly love philosophy, and have the patience of a god, and don't care that you'll never make any money, and stick with projects until they succeed, this might work.

The reason you can't find a forum like that is that nobody wants to do all that work for free.

True, philosophy forums can feel like an echo chamber, but meaningful discussions still emerge for those who seek them. The challenge is filtering the noise.
